September 2023 - Would it lie to me?

Last month I wrote about scraping the internet. Click the “read on web” link above and you will find a link to it. Basically, I described how I need to learn more about the industries I am working with. I need to have a better understanding of what the competition is doing on the internet.

  • Do they have a homepage?

  • Do they have a Google profile?

  • Do they use social media?

  • How active are they on the internet?

This is where the data scraping comes into play. In the 3rd article below I describe how I built a list of 2000 photographers in the greater Frankfurt area. I am working with a photographer and I wanted to have some hard data on hand. Not that she was asking for it but I knew I needed a better understanding of her competition. Yeah, 2000 photographers.

I am also working with a conference interpreter in Switzerland. I also scraped the entire country for translators & interpreters. All the insights I learned from that exercise have taken me down the road of building a database for all those industries I am working with. To date, all of these businesses are locally focused and therefore I can define a region, or polygon (read the article) for this. Next month it will be window installers.

Sounds exciting, right?

HOW TO GAIN A COMPETITIVE EDGE BY ANALYZING YOUR COMPETITORS

https://digital-done-right.com/blog/beat-your-competition-with-data

How can you begin to make suggestions on how to improve a website, an Instagram presence, or any general improvements to a company’s online presentation without data? I know the value of data. I know how to get data and crunch it so it makes sense to the business. I am working with a budding photographer and it would be easy for me to say just do X and then Y. Take the money and run. That’s not me and that’s not how to build local business success. I spent over 20 years as a corporate business consultant and those years taught me the value of data.

My random thoughts. ✌🏻

WOULD CHATGPT LIE TO ME?

I use ChatGPT, Bing & Bard during the working week. Do you?

I use it to create catchy titles for blog posts, to write summaries of articles, and sometimes to brainstorm ideas. It can also be used for more complicated internet searches.

Back in February, I started planning a trip to Louisiana (my birthplace) later this year. I wanted to take some friends with me and needed a plan for a short tour. Now I know the area quite well. Maybe not all the latest restaurants and nightclubs, but the places tourists want to visit don't change that often. Well, in Louisiana they sometimes change after a hurricane.

Well, back in February I opened up ChatGPT and asked it for a 3-day tour with 3 stops along the way. I had only given it 2 places that I really wanted to visit and the result was really good. Well, to be honest, it will be about 90% of the tour we will do in October.

I later asked for an itinerary, driving plans, hotel, and restaurant ideas and saved it all in a plan to refine. What a cool use of ChatGPT.

The "success" was due to my knowledge of the area and the places we would be visiting. I could have created the same itinerary as ChatGPT, but it would have taken me a day or two. So from a time-saving perspective, it worked really well.

But then there was this other example. Follow the link to the whole story!
